IRONBOUND-SEAL-FLAT ISLANDS
West Ironbound Island is a protected 120-acre island along the Atlantic coast of southwest Nova Scotia, just off-shore from Hirtle’s Beach on the Kingsburg Peninsula, and situated within the LaHave River estuary. (Kingsburg Costal Conservancy.
Seal Island lies off the south west tip of Nova Scotia at "the elbow of the Bay of Fundy", where the broad mouth of the bay meets the waters of the open Atlantic. For more than three centuries storms, fog and powerful tides have conspired to wreck scores of ships on the island and its surrounding ledges. At least 160 vessels have come to grief in the area, making Seal Island historically one of Atlantic Canada's most dangerous areas for shipping, along with Sable and St. Paul's Islands. Flat Island is a short distance from Seal Island off the south west tip of Nova Scotia's Yarmouth County.
